Discepoli-Barbiero – An Eclipse of Images
Discepoli-Barbiero’s “An Eclipse of Images” effortlessly combines classical, ambient, and jazz into an all-engrossing whole. Elegantly arranged the loose structure of the pieces results in moments that are deeply moving. By keeping things stripped down to the utter essentials what results in a sound that thrives with endless opportunities. It is a testament to the good taste of all involved that this feels akin to a living breathing organism. Attention to detail is a must as the pieces positively thrive with unbridled joy and optimism with the world.
Hushed whispers introduce “Autopoiesis”. At first near silence dominates the piece but as small snippets of melody seeps into the field of perception the album truly begins in earnest. Once the rhythm is set everything else flows from that letting the volume and intensity increase accordingly. Particularly resonant string work is apparent on “An eclipse of images: Gathering In” which serves as the heart of the album of sorts. A steady rhythm emerges on the mournful mood of “The Occulted Measure” as the duo plays with texture and tone, threatening to derail the proceedings. By far the highlight of the album is the mysterious spacious work of “Multiple Horizons”. On this track the duo prove to be adept at letting everything melt away to reveal a sinewy one, one which is unable to be properly pinned down. “The Stream Under Consciousness” ends things on a jazzy note as the rhythm is quite carefree in style.
“An Eclipse of Images” displays a sense of loveliness courtesy of Discepoli-Barbiero’s uncanny ability to communicate with each other.
