Gates – You Are All You Have Left To Fear 7.0
found on here. Tristeza’s sound in particular comes across on practically every
track. That certain colorful, breezy vibe they give off can be felt during the
EP’s mellower moments. For me the mellower parts of the EP are my favorites.
However since Gates also includes vocals it is not entirely in Post-Rock’s
instrumental territory. Rather consider this a more emotional version of
Post-Rock, one that wears its heart on its sleeve. Note too that it gets
usually loud, almost thrash-like in its many crescendos.
songs tend to work to Gates’ strengths. Their opener ‘They Only See Shadows’ is
a good example of how stretching out results in a fuller sound. With less rush
they manage to really hit all the right emotional points. In this opener they
grow into the release. Parts of their aggressive stance work well too. ‘Like
This You Mean’ is perhaps the closest they get to an outright pop song. It is
full of energy. Yet here too they manage to relax. The quiet spaces work nicely
in this song to bring everything to a head (and shout).
vocals express a certain amount of angst. Shouting together makes it feel even
more dramatic. Gates is a unified whole of a band. They go through fits of
quiet reflection and explosion almost simultaneously. Together these two
elements make ‘You Are All You Have Left To Fear’ a remarkably enjoyable EP.
