Interglacials by Dalton Day
A thousand year MEME is real. Scientists have spent hundreds of years studying it. Nobody will be thawed out after so many years they will be solidified via the hotness due to global warming.
The change happens slowly. Long ago the change happened slowly too. Change, real change, is rarely dramatic. Humanity used to be something else, something less than human, more honest with their surroundings. Sadly humanity decided it was better for some strange purpose. Animals understand what they need to do with their lives: do humans? Wolves know who they need to hunt down in order to survive. For a human the greatest threat to their existence is other humans.
Paws rest on the ground. Humans block out the ground with feet homes. Animals know this is absurd. They must remain close to the ground ready to pounce on opportunity. Jumping up into thin air is easy if one is ready. From afar animals watch hiding when necessary. No matter how quiet a human might be they are always obvious. Less obvious to animals and more obvious to humans is how a joke works. Many animals lack the ability to tell jokes relying instead upon physical humor.
Trees bloom with dogs. Humans can make that joke knowing dogs are typically born. With genetics though it becomes more likely that a dog tree may become more than a joke and a reality. Jokes are weird that way they are antiquated and age poorly. Partly true and partly false, a joke balances so many things at the same time. Only when taken together, with previous knowledge, does it become obvious.
Bee stings have an obvious quality of them of pain of risk. The first time being stung by a bee is educational. After that it loses its ability to teach. In orchards bees reside smelling the lovely apples, really whatever grows there. Bees are not picky. Like small children bees build tree houses though they use the awesome quality of General Mills’ award-winning cereal honeycomb.
Dreams should win awards but they don’t. Something about their false nature. Transformation is real. Earth needs it. Without transformation there is no evolution. One day even trees will realize what they can do to extend their lives. Bears love trees because bears like how a tree can be a barer of great honey. Unfortunately bears do not realize the danger of their honey addiction until it is much too late.
Sadness, sabotage, these can guide a person into dark impulses. At night the impulses become much more challenging. Light can banish as much darkness as it wants. That is one of the nice things about light. Another nice thing about light is how useful it is in guiding ships at sea. Out at sea there is so much emptiness and there is something so terrifying about that. Vacuums as vast as the sea attract something, anything to fill it. Even an empty tree attracts birds and the tree is powerless to save itself from such a fate, particularly with such a defeatist attitude.
Nesting serves great purpose. A home is where the heart is. People go to great lengths to ensure their heart is safe at home. Sadly even home has death. Everywhere has death it is one of the most important things about mortality. Metals rusts and decays, which is crazy because it isn’t even a living creature yet subject to the same refinement of its decline. Panic leads to a decline too though it is far more sudden. Without thinking acting in one’s worst interest is the most likely scenario for any given creature.
To be a fixture is to be a light. Consistency is rare and ought to be celebrated. Affection happens with the right atmosphere. Negotiation brings better outcomes. Such happiness can bring springtime blooms. DNA allows for such growth. Libraries of generations the way DNA works is it lets people run free knowing what is in store for them moving forward. No matter what happens there is always forward, up, towards a better way to be.
