OPERANT – Harnessed To Flesh
OPERANT delivers a brutal wall of sound approach with the power electronics inflected rush of “Harnessed To Flesh”. Beyond harsh, the tracks delve into ugly feedback squalls and physical bass rumbling frequencies. Holding nothing back these pieces ooze with an unparalleled feeling of pure threat. Downright physical the songs have an eerie ominous quality to them, letting everything roam free in the caustic bleak territories. Melody, rhythm, these are mere afterthoughts for the utmost importance is placed upon the unfurling of grand atmospheres, ones that feel outright haunting.
Cryptically named “Also To The Inorganic World” opens the collection up with a threatening pummeling bass. Unable or unwilling to settle into a discernible groove, the song essentially bursts into various waves of disorienting distortion. A little more spacious but no less unsettling “Be A Boy” incorporates garbled transmissions and a far-away singer to great effect. Here the track does embrace a rhythm of sorts, a hyperkinetic martial beat yet this is only intermittent. Industrial edged with a mechanical sheen “Chancellory” sprawls out into the unknown. Easily the highlight of the collection comes with the strange journey of “The Sacrifice Of Meaning For Power”. Starting out with a pastoral quality before quickly rushing into an assault on the senses, “Dead Realties VIII” refuses to let up for any reason as it grows and grows.
With “Harnessed To Flesh” OPERANT chooses to explore the most uneasy of textures and terrains, resulting in a kaleidoscopic look into pitch-black darkness.
