Plastic Barricades – Mechanics of Life
Plastic Barricades tap into a fiery passion on the exuberant “Mechanics of Life”. Rushing by in a glorious blur, the color employed throughout gives the songs a kaleidoscopic haze. Stylistically Plastic Barricades stays well-grounded in a fine indie rock tradition while incorporating elements of pop and post-rock into the proceedings. Lyrics have a poetic quality to them as they unfurl to reveal small stories from lives lived to the absolute fullest. Over the course of the album Plastic Barricades chooses a playful quality, one that permeates every nook and cranny.
A graceful touch opens the jubilant “How Goldfish Grow”. Clever lyricism defines the childlike wonder that imbues the entire track. With a slight punk edge comes the barreling speeds of “Singularity 2045”. Stripping things down to the essentials “Be The Change” chooses a folk-like aura to explore. Brimming with energy “Needles in Haystacks” gives off a long-lost 80s pop hit quality. Easily one of the highlights of the album everything about “Needles in Haystacks” works from the reassuring vocals to the warm guitar tones. Giddy to its very core “Medicine Man” features a perfect built up, lead up nimble riffs and economical, almost krautrock-like rhythms. Going through as if in a delightful dream “Voices” embraces space as guitars soar into the sky. Sung straight from the heart comes the fantastic finale of “Masterminds”.
Celebratory in spirit, Plastic Barricades create a compelling tapestry of sound on the gorgeous “Mechanics of Life”.
