Pop Serial # 5
Serial hits the internet on an internet near you! Stephen Tully Dierks, or STD
as his friends call him, has been responsible for one of the most critically
acclaimed collections to come out of the Alt Lit scene. Some posit that STD’s
work helped to bring the Alt Lit community into a community rather than an
undifferentiated group of writers writing to their heart’s little online content.
Thankfully Pop Serial # 5 is going to be a true ‘heavy-hitter’ with the biggest
names in Alt Lit yesterday, today and potentially tomorrow. Yes STD is a
tasteful taste maker who understands the excellent literature that online kids
need in their lives.
Roggenbuck is heavily featured in Pop Serial # 5. For Beach Sloth readers
unaware of Steve Roggenbuck what the hell are you doing here? Beach Sloth
strongly supports Steve Roggenbuck’s efforts. Luna Miguel is another perennial
favorite appearing in the latest issue. Her work is wonderful and everyone
ought to check her work out. The European Union ought to thank its lucky stars
that Luna Miguel contributes to their cultural significance in a big way. Ben Brooks
is young with several books to his name in addition to recently becoming a Vice
Magazine writer. West Virginia needs to give Scott McClanahan a medal for his
work. Currently Scott McClanahan is high on the list of ‘people Beach Sloth
needs to meet’.
Troemel serves as an online prankster no mean feat considering the amount of
pranksters living their lives online. Heiko Julien is in Pop Serial # 5 and is
responsible for the excellent ‘finale’ chapbook that graced Pop Serial # 4 last
year. Crispin Best might be one of the kindest individuals Beach Sloth has had
the pleasure to meet from across the pond. Probably the British call it ‘across
the pond’ because the United States has two fucking oceans, Pacific and
Atlantic. Ana Carrete’s work engages audiences like no other. People really
need to lift Ana Carrete down the street singing her praises to all passers-by.
Beach Sloth has done so on multiple occasions.
Mallicoat is a famous actor from the ‘Shitty Youth’ Zachary German documentary.
His readings are incredibly unusual for their love of the Gatorade ‘G’ series.
James Ganas is the Frasier of Alt Lit via geographic proximately and radio show
fame. Mira Gonzalez already has one poetry book devoted to her work distributed
by Sorry House, run by another Pop Serial # 5 contributor Spencer Madsen.
Andrew James Weatherhead works for Muumuu House with structural integrity and
is a Pop Serial ‘anchor’. Timothy Willis Sanders loves Orange Juice so much
that he wrote an entire book about the beloved breakfast beverage. Theron
Jacobs runs one of the best Twitter accounts ever and his work on Twitter is
second to none. Mike Bushnell wears more makeup than any other Pop Serial
writer. Anyone in attendance of Mike Bushnell’s reading will cry and will need
earplugs. Mike Bushnell is a loud lovable bastard.
Morissette represents the Canadian contingent. His graphs are perfect. Next to
him is yet another Canadian Ashley Opheim responsible for mysterious
transmissions from the heart of a satellite orbiting the Earth at high
velocities. Cassandra Gillig loves mash-ups and her mash-ups have made her
‘Tumblr’ famous. Her proclivity for SELFIEs is second to none. Lucy Tiven does
more than raise the roof she sets the roof ablaze for an overly enthusiastic DJ
who can claim without a trace of irony that the ‘roof is on fire’. Michael
Hessel-Mial is the Picasso of Macros. Nobody can touch Michael Hessel-Mial’s
Macro game unless they want to get burned.
Jean Alexander may be the best thing to come out of Baltimore since John
Waters. Her readings are frequently hilarious. Good comedic timing that
Baltimore native now New York based. Gabby Bess has catapulted into Alt Lit
fame and fortune (fortune being a relative term in Alt Lit). Zachery Wood
writes consistently bizarre otherworldly Facebook statuses that transform
Facebook into an art form. Dave Shaw likes fruit and words and puts them
together into wonderful new ways. Theo Thimo and Moon Temple simply rule. Together
they are very likely to be nominated as ‘Cutest Alt Lit Couple’ on the
prestigious as fuck awards ceremony ‘The Beachies’.
other people make it into the issue? People state that there are ‘more to be
announced’ but honestly that is already a ton of people. Blaise Larmee is doing
art for the issue. The cover is going to be done by the infinitely talented and
amicable Tao Lin of Tao Lin fame. Can the Internet handle ‘Pop Serial # 5’? Unfortunately
the Internet has no choice: Pop Serial # 5 is coming for it.
