Russell Lee – What Do I Do
Russell Lee’s “What Do I Do” is soulful country sung straight from the heart. Imbuing a little bit of blues within the album the songs are full of hope and optimism. The lyrics invoke a desire of bringing people together to create a sense of community. Recalling the best of Johnny Cash’s work, there is a timeless elegance to the album. Stylistically Russell Lee taps into classic rock which gives the album serious power. Production values are perfect capturing the raw visceral energy of Russell Lee’s passionate vocals.
Things start off on a mellow note with the laid-back groove of “Picture”. Contemplative to its core the song explores how a relatioship forms and thrives. Rather hopeful in nature is the joyful celebration of “Piece of this Earth”. A rollicking rhythm defines the spirited loveliness of the title track. By far the highlight of the album the way the song unfolds reveals a true sense of affection, of confusion in how to figure out how a relationship can grow. Stripping the sound down to the essentials is the intimacy of “If you Could Read My Mind”. Quite comforting in tone is the gentleness of “Different Time”. Strong vocals define the powerful work of “Amazing Grace”. Russell Lee ends the album off on a soothing note with the hypnotic chamber pop of “Goodbye”.
On “What Do I Do” Russell Lee presents a shimmering future of country, as the songs are thoughtful and highly articulate with a poetic quality deeply embedded within them.
