Safir Nou – Groundless
Light and airy, Safir Nou’s “Groundless” feels positively optimistic in scope. Stylistically varied Safir Nou ties together a vast multitude of elements from folk, classical, even a hint of jazz. With a loose feel what brings all these pieces together is a sense of true tenderness. A narrative forms throughout the collection, wordless, as the songs feel absolutely expressive. Melodies linger in the mind long after they are over as Safir Nou brings a great many together into a coherent whole.
Gentle in spirit is the album opener “Imaginary Cloud”. Featuring nimble guitar work the song feels infinitely comfortable. Patterns emerge out of the many layers resulting in a sound that at times feels reminiscent of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. A slight post-rock vibe emerges from the low-key “New Lunacy”. Like a wordless variation on the Sea and Cake, a tropical, almost bossa nova like approach seems to be in effect throughout the song. Towards the song’s finale all of these many elements come together courtesy of particularly expressive string work. A stripped down style defines the sparse “Floating on a note”. Rather beautiful is the colorful swirl of “Land-escape”. Here they show off their dexterous work as everyone plays off of each other resulting in a community-oriented sound. Closing the album off on a dreamy note is the sleepy “Diary from the groundless land”.
Truly lovely in nature Safir Nou’s “Groundless” is a radiant joy of an album.
