form. They are the gateway story to a full-length book. Reading these stories
is an absolute pleasure. Each piece is a self-contained ecosystem. While
the house may be shabby these stories help bring it up.
wants political power. People normally abuse it. What Nic wants to do is bring
back nostalgia. Remember when everything was great? That was years before we
could comprehend it. From such a small stature things were big and important.
With age wonder fades away. Cinnamon gum is a comfort gum, the kind of gum that
makes waiting rooms reek of politeness. Few know this but Tesla invented the
original ‘Electric Slide’. Electricity used to flow out of the inventor’s
flailing limbs like affection.
Gonzalez sleeps on the couch. Wonder when she will move to the beds of the
world. They are comfier. Cartoons on the TV remind me of a time with TV. TV
seems long ago, a technology that is almost quaint in its absolute passiveness.
Interaction or thought is not part of TV’s system. Rather it just wants people
to bask in its non-threatening, non-demanding glow.
Islam has a friend full of bile in the literal sense. Wine does that to people.
It messes them up, warns them of sophistication. This friend deleted their Facebook, how bizarre. Internet friends are
introduced to this IRL friend. Can IRL ever
understand the internet and vice versa? Or is the distance just too far with
communities that are too strictly defined? Lack of direction means Austin is
thinking hard about life. Most people never think about where they are going
and they don’t care either. Good taste in electronic music is passed down
through nerdy families.
Crawford shows us the dead calm of life after almost death. This is a strange
story. After nearly ending it every detail is noticeable. Once the unnamed
character gets up they feel a sense of calm. Even traveling, the most basic
task becomes an accomplishment. Various figures care about him, hence how he
got into the hospital and how the doctor speaks to him. Care is hard to do in
such situations. Sometimes
sadness requires time to be alone in one’s thoughts.
Gillig loves David Lynch. Watch the Super bowl or, as my spell check puts it,
superb owl. Feel that whoever is in
charge of spell check may be a bit of a David Lynch fan. Imagine him running
down the field. He can do it; he used to be a boy scout. Glad the rest of the
football team disappears when he’s around. NBC agrees having broadcast his face
for three hours. I miss David Lynch I want him to come back to Earth again.
Tully Dierks is an abstract emotionalist. Normal everyday things are beautiful. What
you do every day is gorgeous. People share so many similar life experiences no
matter where they are. The language Stephen uses creates a dream-like world, to
see the beauty in the everyday. Even the most basic things (eating, going to
the bathroom, sex) can be abstracted. Love how the piece creates a dream within
Arsenault saves himself for marriage. Love knows nothing about geography. Yes the internet is for lovers perhaps more
than it ever realized. We’ve come a long way from the internet being used for
creepy, self-servicing devices. Sure it still does that but now you can reach
out to others. People you’ve never met can help you through the toughest times
of your life. Being a hermit keeps getting harder and harder.
Carter’s characters are sad. Their lives are pointless. Everything they do is
out of an unjustifiable hurt. Dogs are there because they have been abandoned. Out
of the decay flowers grow. All the characters rely on is spying. Spying becomes
their only mode of handling each other’s behavior. Both know it yet do nothing
Astapkov explains Lorrie Moore’s observations on Tao Lin’s condition. I like
the structure of the story. Observations begin it. Little details are magnified
with each additional entry. Eventually he opens up to her. Gimmicks are
documented. A mixture of the real and surreal takes place. Slowly her writing
begins to mimic his style. Sentences decrease in size and perspective. Judgment
is thrown out as it becomes a sheer description of what happens.
Landry graduates high school. Everything that happens comes up. People go to
the prom. He joins them for unexplained reasons. Feel prom is a manufactured
event created to give a sense of closure. It is fairly expensive. Remember my
prom quite well. There I was in somebody’s apartment eating chocolate ice cream
and watching movies while my class went to prom.
Shaw experiences the pain of life. We move away from those we care about. I do
it all the time. Miss those you used to talk to every day. Time is supposed to
heal those wounds but it never really succeeds. Time is a poor substitute for
ends it with a bike ride. The first time is a different universe, a different
reality. For the first time everyone is closer. Nobody knows much about
Toronto. People are discovering the city. Read the second half. Things
intensify due to unpleasant experiences. Unfortunately we cannot prevent these
things from happening, they are part of life.
Doll House is growing in size. With 12 submissions it is getting quite massive.
Prepare for it becoming a regular house quite soon.
