Song of Yourself by Kristen Iskandrian
Pearls of consciousness form when a piece of sand gets lodged in the clam of the mind. When a pearl is removed from the clam it has the option of becoming something far greater, usually the bird that forced the clam to opener. Birds take clams, mussels, and other shellfish from the ocean, fly them up high, to let them fall on the rocks below. Due to their inability to come up with an instrument to let them break it open in other ways, this is their best method. Upon a bird hatching from the pearl it becomes a rare one indeed. No regular bird is borne from such beauty the sea does not allow for such things to happen.
Saying no is an important life skill. Many are told that saying no is anti-social, not socially acceptable, but how much does a person need? Why is boundless ambition, the desire to consume all, held higher than those who know what enough looks like? Instead these birds are given too much, so much they can no longer fly. Held down by everything, the unsubstantial, the unnecessary, the birds realize they need to be light in order to have their freedom. To go too far down this path, to reject absolutely everything results in an entirely different problem.
To create identity means learning how to balance saying yes and saying no. Nobody needs so many things, more things than they could ever use in a lifetime. However, to reject experiences both the good and the bad can leave a person as too empty. Refusal of filling oneself with anything can create a hallow shell of a being, who seemingly has opted out of any kind of definition. A blank slate of being, such a bird finds themselves blown asunder by any type of wind. Without a compass it can be hard to truly find a place to carry on towards.
Hearts, with all their failings, try to sing their songs like the songbirds in lovely dew-laden mornings. This is what a heart should be filled with: simple pleasure accessible to all. Complication leads to complications of worries about keeping up appearances and retention of vital knowledge. Such pretty songs can fill the air and this is something to say yes to, to not reject for it is a universal beautiful thing that represents that the world can be perfect when it is kept to the essentials.
