Tiny People by Russ Woods
Woods is a tall man. Every day when he goes outside people look up to him. They
look up to him at his job. At night even more look up to him as an independent
alt lit writer. I do. Here Russ focuses on those with less grandeur, the little
guy, you know, the Tiny People. They are everywhere. Sometimes I feel so small.
I wonder ‘Will I ever grow bigger?’ Or does fate tell me I will always be this
size, looking up. At least looking up feels a bit optimistic I reckon.
chapbook begins with an excerpt from the Bible about protection. The Bible,
yeah there’s an app for that. You can get salvation on your cellphone as long
as it’s smart. Guess I’m happy with my pre-paid phone. I don’t need
text-messaged proselytizing. Right now I’m doing fine with billboards about Jesus
paid for by overturned money changer’s tables.
inside Russ. Unfortunately they make him feel like shit. Wonder if this has to
do with Russ smoking outside on his porch right on his day off. If he thinks
tiny people live inside him he might want to stop smoking for a little while.
Despite the Tiny People Russ lives a good life. He takes care of his dog, his
grandfather, and his mother.
relate to Russ’s experience with the Gas Company all too well. My electric
company wanted a copy of my Social Security card faxed to them. Faxes terrify
me. I said no. I still have electricity. I won I think. For my victory I pay
them at the end of every month.
worries about the deaths of Tiny People. It is okay. Things die every day.
Attending funerals in your penis seems a little masturbatory anyway. Feel one
can probably avoiding going to those funerals in your own body.
knee people – Russ talks some serious shit about them. I don’t know why. Knee
people are good. They help me bike, run, and sit cross-legged. I’m proud of
them. Not sure why Russ feels the need to endlessly berate them. He has
conflicted emotions about them. Wonder if his basketball playing abilities have
anything to do with this hostility.
the design of Tiny People. Each page is filled to the brim with little details,
symbols, images. I assume these are to honor the fallen Tiny People all over
his body. Maybe their souls ascending to heaven gave me the idea. Maybe they
sent him a text message about it.
